VENETIAN YELLOWS

In the chilly kitchen, cracking eggs. Outside the cool London sky darkened. He wondered if he really did leave his camera in the park.

He stared at the different yellows. Ten years ago perhaps, he had watched a Venetian whisk eggs with her fat brown hand.

It took a long time to cook these days, a sullen process. He was pepper without salt. His daughter happy so long as there was ketchup; this he knew should be enough.
